Building a Better Way to Age in Lexington

What would it take for older adults to remain connected, supported, and meaningfully engaged in the communities they call home?

A Caring Place brought together an extraordinary coalition to explore that question: two Lexington-Fayette Urban County Councilmembers, BUILD—a coalition of 26 local congregations working for social justice—three university professors, and Lexington’s Director of Aging and Disability Services.

Together, we examined whether the Village model could help Lexington residents age in place with greater connection, purpose, and access to support. Our feasibility study combines a community assessment of need, comparisons with successful Villages across the United States, and a closer look at how needs differ among the general public, homeowners association communities, and subsidized housing residents. It also explores how technology can extend the reach of the Village Movement without losing the personal relationships at its heart.

The findings offer more than data. They provide a practical roadmap for creating stronger, more connected communities where people of all ages can belong, contribute, and thrive.

The Village Movement: A National Model for Aging Well

A Caring Place is part of a growing national movement helping older adults remain independent, connected, and actively engaged in their communities.

The Village to Village Network connects and supports Villages throughout the United States. It provides guidance for communities developing new Villages, resources for established programs, and a national forum where Village leaders can exchange ideas and successful practices.

Although every Village is shaped by the people and needs of its own community, all share a common purpose: reducing social isolation, strengthening independence, and helping older adults continue to live meaningful lives in the places they call home.
